LOOK: The Tag Heuer x Super Mario Limited-Edition Watch

The launch of the Tag Heuer x Super Mario Limited Edition watch, with the reference SBG8A13, marks the beginning of a partnership between the Swiss luxury watchmaker and video game company, Nintendo.

“The inspiration for this collaboration came from our desire to gamify and bring excitement to our new wellness application, and Super Mario instantly came to our minds,” Frédéric Arnault, CEO of Tag Heuer, said in a statement.

Everyone’s favorite plumber has an international and intergenerational appeal. But, according to Arnault, his ultimate super-active character is what made them decide to use him as an inspiration for the new Tag Heuer watch.

Super Mario Smartwatch: Features & Specs

Following the “Easter egg” concept that we’re all too familiar with, the Mario watch adds new excitement with the many features and hidden surprises waiting for the wearers. The animations are based on the game’s rewards system. To start, Mario will greet you with a welcoming salute in the morning. As you get through the day, you can unlock rewards as you hit each stage of your daily target from 25 to 50, 75, and 100%. At every stage, there is a different animation that will play out on the dial.

In a true Mario fashion, you would also find different, iconic Mario objects at the bezel: the Super Mushroom that makes Mario grow, the Pipe that allows him to take a shortcut, and the Super Star that makes him invincible. These features are positioned at 3 o’clock, 6 o’clock, and 9 o’clock, respectively. Meanwhile, as you hit 100% of your daily step count target, Mario will climb the Goal Pole as he would when he wins the game.

For a complete Mario experience, the famous Connected watch face has been reinterpreted exclusively for this special version. There are the retroelements, including the pixelated Mario that appeared in the 1985 version.

Two versions of the watch face were also created using Mario’s iconic red and blue colors, with references to his red cap. You would also notice that the neural network of the Orbital watch face is replaced by the game elements rotating in a movement.

Completing this limited edition watch are some other subtle Mario references from the bezel graduation, push-buttons, and crown logo in red lacquered color to the engraved M symbol on the strap buckles and crown, and the inscription on the case back, along with two interchangeable red straps.

Other Tag Heuer Connected Watches to Check Out

The 2,000-limited Super Mario watch is already sold out from the Tag Heuer website. Were you not quick enough to get your hands on this collectible piece? Don’t worry! Tag Heuer has a wide range of other Connected watches that are sure to appeal to your taste as well.

1.    Connected Modular Quartz Digital Ref. SBF818001.11FT8031

The Tag Heuer Connected is by far the most luxurious android smartwatch on the market today. It features the distinct Tag Heuer case design, equipped with advanced software and well-designed sports tracking. This particular reference is as stylish as it’s functional, featuring a fixed bezel, 41mm brushed silver-tone titanium case, and a black rubber strap for optimal comfort and style. The digital dial has an AMOLED touch screen display with features such as date, GPS tracking and navigation, alarm, and Bluetooth.

2.    Connected Modular Quartz Digital Ref. SBF818000.11FT8031

Sure, the Tag Heuer Connected is one of the most expensive smartwatches you can buy. But, Tag Heuer continues to prove that it’s worth the money by consistently improving on previous generations with better fitness tracking and a more refined design. This model is a testament to that with all its advanced features and high-quality materials. It runs on a battery-powered Quartz movement, further proving its reliability.

3.    Connected 2020 45mm Titanium Case SBG8A80.BT6221

As far as smartwatches are concerned, the Tag Heuer Connected is quite handsome. You’ll love it for its elegant black bezel with black straps, though alternatives abound. This sentiment is particularly true with this 2020 version. Sporting a 45mm titanium case, this reference features unique rose gold hands and index hour markers. The digital dial is complete with minute markers around the outer rim and three sub-dial displays. The watch is presented in a rubber bracelet and offers 50m of water resistance.

4.    Connected Modular Processor Ref. SBF8A8023.32EB0103

This Modular Processor looks more like a dress watch than a smartwatch, largely owing to its brown calfskin leather strap. This holds the digital dial and a 45mm titanium case with sapphire crystal glass. The design may not sit well with the majority, but it has quite a very specific audience: consumers who want the extra smarts in a watch, without it looking too much like a smartwatch. It’s something that Tag Heuer achieves so well.

Takeaway

Sure, the Tag Heuer Connected may not have the most advanced features as far as smartwatches are concerned. But, what it lacks in today’s smartest technology, it makes up for in the data that it gathers after every end of the day. It is connected to a dedicated app where you can access all your stats and identify the areas where you can improve.

It’s arguably one of the nicest-designed smartwatches you’ll ever wear. It doesn’t look like a smartwatch, but a watch that you’d wear not only for its smart functions but its style and aesthetic appeal as well.
