FIFA has introduced 5 new and innovative rules in its international football regulations starting this season and could be part of the Qatar 2022 World Cup which will be held in November.

Less time is left for the next World Cup to kick off and the draw for the group selection has left expectations higher than ever. This way, with confirmation from each group, the different selected teams will already be preparing for what will be the planning of each game, but they will also have to consider 5 new rules that can change football like ours.

In this regard, it was announced by IFAB (International Board), the FIFA entity that enforces the new rules in football, that from 1 June there have been a series of changes in the sport’s international rules from the following season.

In this way, the most relevant change which has persisted in most of the most important leagues in the world is the rule 5 changes, which have been introduced by FIFA as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Following this, the above-mentioned entity communicated: “A temporary modification in which clubs in top-level competitions are allowed the option to make up to five substitutions (with a limited number of opportunities to do so) to an integrated Rule 3.

It is worth mentioning that the persistence of this rule is of great help to the selected teams and teams that have more points because they, by having bigger substitutes, will be able to accommodate more famous players on the pitch than the lesser ones, even in club competitions as may be the case at the World Cup in Qatar.

In turn, other specific changes refer to penalties and the position of the goalkeeper/goalkeeper in them. Therefore, the goalkeeper must have 2 feet on the goal line at the time of execution, thus changing the rule that allows him to advance at least one foot at the time the implementer makes his shot.

In addition, from next season it will be possible to reprimand and eject members of the coaching staff during penalty shootouts, a change that imposes another drastic change in the series from 11 steps in the limit moment.

All IFAB changes and clarifications for the 2022/23 season:

The five-change rule is preserved

The draw made by the main referee before the match will determine the choice of court and kick-off

A member of the coaching staff may be warned or sent off during a penalty shootout

No foul by the goalkeeper’s hand in his area

If a player leaves the field of play without the referee’s permission, an indirect free kick will be awarded from where he left.

The goalkeeper can no longer put one foot in front of the line at the time of penalty execution
